Program Description:

The Chicago College of Performing Arts (CCPA) offers a Bachelor of Music and a Master of Music in the following concentrations:

  • Composition  
  • Jazz Studies Performance or Composition
  • Music Education
  • Music History
  • Music Theory (minor)
  • Orchestral Studies
  • Performance (Bassoon, Cello, Clarinet, Double Bass, Flute, French Horn, Guitar, Harp, Harpsichord, Oboe, Organ, Percussion, Piano, Trombone, Trumpet, Tuba, Violin, Viola, Voice)

 In addition, the Masters of Music is offered in piano performance and pedagogy, and vocal pedagogy.

The CCPA offers two professional certificate programs, one awarding a diploma in piano, violin, or violoncello performance, and the other a diploma in orchestral studies.  

The undergraduate programs in the CCPA enrolled 374 majors in Fall, 200, which is a slight decrease from the 383 majors enrolled in Fall, 1999.  Undergraduate credit hours increased from 4,062 in Fall, 1999 to 4,413 in Fall, 2001.  Graduate students enrolled in CCPA programs increased from 143 in Fall, 1999 to 167 in Fall, 2001.  Credit hours at the graduate level increased from 1,166 in Fall, 1999 to 1,475 in  Fall, 2001.

Language Guidelines:  

English is the preferred language. Important publications in major European languages will be purchased as well.

Chronological Coverage:  

All periods of history will be covered.

Geographical Guidelines:  

Global in scope.

Requirements of Accrediting Body for Program (if applicable):  

The National Association of Schools of Music (NASM) lists specific requirements in NASM Accreditation Procedures.

Subject scope

Western art music of all periods, jazz of all styles and periods, selective materials on blues and folk music of the United Sates, selective materials on music of non-Western cultures, very selective materials on popular music.

Formats Preferred:  

Print - Scholarly monographs, journals, serial publications, study scores, performing scores, music reference materials

Recordings – Compact discs will be purchased exclusively with the exception in the case that a recording is only available in a different format. Domestic releases will be purchased in difference to imports, unless an import issue is the only available recording.

Archival – The Performing Arts Library will endeavor to collect material related to the CCPA; it’s faculty members and students. Rare books and scores may be purchased very selectively to supplement the existing collection.

Distribution of Materials between Downtown and Robin Libraries:

All materials will be kept in the Performing Arts Library in the Auditorium building.

Gifts

The Performing Arts Library will accept gifts only after careful evaluation for their potential usefulness to the mission of the library; they must primarily support the university curriculum. The following restrictions apply:

  • Phonograph (LP) and cassette tape sound recordings will not be accepted.

  • Materials must be in good condition, and be able to withstand normal wear and tear of active use.

  • Any items not added to the collection may be disposed of in any way the library sees fit.

Resources adequate for imparting and maintaining knowledge about all aspects of the topic which are more extensive than the intermediate level but less than those needed for doctoral and independent research that include:

  • An almost complete collection of core works including significant numbers of retrospective materials and resources.
  • A broader collection of specialized works by lesser-known, as well as well-known authors.
  • An extensive collection of general and specialized monographs and reference works.
  • An extensive collection of general and specialized periodicals and indexes/abstracts.
  • Defined access to a broad range of specialized electronic resources.
