Obtaining Articles
DL Home
What kind of articles do you need?
If you need articles on a specific
topic:
-
If
you don't know what database to use, you can start with the
Online Resources by Subject page on the library site.
-
Click on the appropriate
subject area (Business, Education, Psychology, etc) to see a list of
databases that may be useful. The most relevant
are usually listed first. Simply click on the titles to access them.
-
To
find more, try searching other databases in your subject area since they
may contain different material.
-
For help forming useful searches, consult
the
Getting Started with Research document. You can also
contact RU librarians for help choosing databases or doing
searching.
If you need only scholarly articles:
-
Some databases let you search for
scholarly articles specifically. When viewing a database search screen,
look for options that refine or limit your search to
scholarly/academic/peer-reviewed/refereed articles.
For instance, in the Academic Search Premiere database,
you can click on the check box next to the "Scholarly (Peer Reviewed)
Journals".
-
For help doing
this, go to
How to Use RU's Online Resources for instructions for the online
resource you are searching.
If you need only current articles:
-
When showing the results of a search,
many online resources default to listing the most current journal
articles first.
-
If the online resource displays results
in another way (e.g. relevance), look for an option to sort the results
by date.
-
Many
databases will also let you limit your search before running it.
Examine the search screen to look for any options for searching by
specific date or range of dates (e.g. 2005-2007).
-
For help doing
this, go to
How to Use RU's Online Resources for instructions for the online
resource you are searching.
If you need articles right away:
-
The library has
indicated which databases offer some full-text materials. Look for the
small page image in the
Online Resources by Subject or
Online Resources A-Z lists to easily see full text availability.
(Keep in mind that these databases may still contain some articles that
are not full-text.)
-
Once
you've selected a database and run a search, scan the results to find
articles with full text, which may come in either html or PDF format.
-
If the database you are using does not
offer the full article, you may be able to check to see if another RU
database has it. Look for a "Get Article" button or a link that says
"See more details for locating this item" or "Click here for more
options".
Clicking these links will lead you toward the article if we own an
electronic version or provide suggestions for obtaining it another way.

FAQ
about Get Article for more assistance.
-
When doing a subject search, many online
resources offer an option to limit your search to full text articles
only. Be careful using this feature as it could eliminate articles that
you might be able to obtain right away using the "Get Article" option.
If you need a
particular article from a specific journal:
-
Go to
Find Journals
or Newspapers by Title or Subject on the Library's site.
-
Enter the first few words of the journal
title into the search box or choose the letter that the first word of
the journal title starts with and browse to find the title.
-
Choose the online resource with the dates
that match the article you need.
-
Within the online resource you choose,
you may need to browse further by date or do a search by author or title
words to locate the article.
-
If the journal is only available in
print/microfilm on campus or if Roosevelt does not own the journal, you
can request the article using the
Interlibrary Loan Request Form. If the article can be located, the
text will be sent to your Roosevelt email address.
If you are an RU distance student and you need an article from a journal
that is not available electronically but is available in print/microfilm in
RU's library:
-
Complete the
Interlibrary Loan Request Form.
-
The article will be converted to PDF
format and sent to your Roosevelt email address.
-
It may take 3-4 business days for the
article to be delivered to your email address.
If you need an article from a journal that is not available electronically
and that is not owned by the RU library in print/microfilm:
-
Complete the
Interlibrary Loan Request Form.
-
The article will be converted to PDF
format and sent to your Roosevelt email address.
-
It may take up to two weeks for the
article to be delivered.
